Don't Quit Keep Faith: Lobo's Safety Letayveon Beaton

March 4, 2020

It was all a "Dream" as Biggie Smalls once said, listening to songs in the hall ways at Boca Ceiga High (Gulfport, FL) School back in 2016. This is when the dream started to become reality!

Letayveon was set and ready to sign with the University of Toledo, when that call came it wasn't exactly what he wanted to hear. The day before signing day a coach called and told him that because of a class he didn't  pass he wouldn't be able to sign. Talk about a blow, this hit Letayveon hard.  His mind was set and he was ready to show his new team his talent. Not too long after that call, two Junior colleges reached out to Beaton and he took his talents to Hutchinson, Kansas.

The 1st year didn't go quite as planned and Beaton faced tremendous adversity in Kansas. Home sickness plagued the safety and at times he simply wanted to quit. At this low point of his college career, Beaton called his coach BJ Hall pleading to come home. Hall was able to encourage the young athlete and gave him a broader perspective of why he was there. Beaton came home to get his thoughts together and Coach Hall was there once again to encourage and train the star safety to enhance his skill set. Beaton returned back to Hutchinson and this time around he was better prepared mentally, emotionally, and physically for the upcoming year. He began to appreciate the opportunity that was provided to him and refuse to allow this opportunity to pass him by.

Turning Point:

Summer time had come and it was where Beaton turned it on. He was picking up quickly and the coaches took notice. With his hard work and dedication, Beaton would enter the season as the starting safety and averaged an interception per game.

Major schools were hot on his trail and the name began to pop on recruiting boards around the country. He once again had a minor hiccup with a class which required him to stay in Hutchinson for the spring semester.

A lot of schools wanted him in December but when they couldn't have him due to his class, they began to back off. However, there were two school that stood out. South Alabama & The University of New Mexico. After taking a visit to the Lobo's campus, Beaton committed to New Mexico for the upcoming season. Puzzled, but grateful, Beaton realized that the trials he went through the previous year and his determination to not give up is why he was afforded a 2nd chance. Lobo's be on the look out!

This past season Beaton, Played in all 12 games, starting 10 at safety ... was sixth on the team in tackles with 49, and fourth in solo tackles with 36 ... had a career-high nine tackles against Colorado
